It's more like 3.5 stars, rated 4 to pull up the average a bit.
We were hungry for Chinese BBQ, wanted to try somewhere with a little better ambiance then Cheung Hing (still our favorite Chinese BBQ), decided to give Guangdong a try inspite of the 3 star rating.
The place was not very busy on a Saturday evening, the dining area is quite spacious and relatively clean. Our waitress was friendly, not most helpful with recommendations but we gave her credit for trying. The man sitting nearby was devouring his large bbq rice plate making us very hungry.
We ordered a two item bbq plate with roast duck and roast pork ($15), beef over Chinese Broccoli (12) and clay pot rice with sausage and cured pork ($16). The bbq plate came first followed by the stir fry, the special rice came 20 minutes later as forewarned. The BBQ meats were juicy and tasty, definitely hit the spot for us. We were happy with the generous amount of tender beef on top of the gai-lan, another good dish. The rice came super hot with a fair amount of sausages and cured pork belly, they were a little short on the sauce so we pour in the sauce from the BBQ.... bad for us I know but tasted so good. Everyone was served complimentary dessert of red bean and peanut soup which tasted pretty decent too. Glad that we tried Guangdong, a good spot for casual dinner or family gathering. -

we got the four treasure rice plate. they pulled it out of a microwave and served it to us. the pork skin was way too tough and the food was COLD. choose any other chinese bbq place on irving.. :^(
or go to bei-fang style for some friendly service and housemade dumplings :^) -

Came for a quick lunch with my parents and we left feeling pretty satisfied. We opted to try their duck and preserved egg porridge, shredded pork pan fried noodles, and beef brisket (dry) chow fun.
The first dish that came out was the shredded pork pan fried noodles. The portion size was generous and the fry was definitely fresh and done perfectly. The topping was made up of shredded pork, thinly sliced shitake mushrooms, thin sweet onion slices, and bean sprouts with just enough gravy ladled on top. Though the gravy was a little too salty (in my opinion), I did like the addition of the shitake mushrooms a lot and I also liked that the onions were more carmelized than usual. The bites of sweetness definitely helped to offset the saltiness a little. Overall, it was a good dish.
Second was the beef brisket chow fun. On the menu it's a "wet" sautee, but we opted for the "dry" alternative which was a delicious choice. This was probably my favorite dish of the afternoon. It was seasoned well and came with an ample amount of flat rice noodles, quartered mustard greens, and a nice mix of beef brisket and tendons.
The last dish to come out was unfortunately my least favorite. The porridge was very obviously thickened with some kind of starch and had an overall unnatural and paste-y form. But where the rice portion failed, the additions of chopped peking duck (mostly skin) and preserved eggs was delicious. I really have to commend the preserved eggs in particular. They use a very good quality egg that's gelatinous, fragrant, yet still creamy in the yolk.
Overall, for $33-ish dollars, it was filling and definitely can be considered another option for lunch when on Irving. -

We came in and got the four treasure rice plate which was sadly disappointing. It was roast pork, bbq pork, duck, a boiled egg (I guess as the fourth treasure), cabbage, and rice for ~$15. Unfortunately, we saw them pull our plate out of the microwave before serving it to us and the food was still cold. The food taste just okay; this place definitely doesn't do Chinese bbq justice.

I'm a sucker for these no frills, Chinese bbq rice plates joints.
Duck over rice? Roast pork over rice? And my fave...roast pork with tofu over rice. This spot has items that I haven't had since I was a kid when the Chinese side of my family was around.
There's one lady who works here who is super friendly...not what you'd usually expect. The duck I had was roasted well, meaty, with a crispy skin. The roast pork with tofu brought back great memories but just didn't have the flavor profile that I remembered. It was pretty bland but wouldn't stop me from ordering it again. This is coming from someone who never adds salt or soy to my restaurant dishes! Made an exception this time.
Cheung Hing is still the reigning champ in the city but this spot is another go to if you're looking for other dishes besides bbq.
